Örebro Syrianska IF have moved quickly to improve their defensive ranks with the capture of AX duo Alex Wimmer and Sean Toth. Both have signed their first professional deals in football as the club looks to improve on 2014’s fifth place finish in the Swedish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Alex Wimmer began his association with AX at the 2014 combines in Chicago and Fort Lauderdale, and his performances ensured he was invited onto the Ireland and Sweden showcase tour in early 2015. The talented shot-stopper performed well and was invited to trial with IFK Lulea where fellow ‘keeper Zac Lubin, another AX player, had just rejected a contract extension to seek new pastures.

The 6’4” former Ohio State player was unlucky not to secure a deal with Lulea, but after Syrianska contacted respected AX Scandinavian director Patrick Walker asking if he knew of an available goalkeeper, he sent on Wimmer’s highlights to the Swedbank Park outfit. Following the recommendation and Wimmer’s talents shown in the video, they were quick to tie him down for the 2015 campaign.

Trying to ensure Wimmer has little work to do in the Syrianska net will be Sean Toth. The Australian-born defender is a fine example of how perseverance and a fine attitude can pay off in earning a professional contract. His association with AX began back in 2013 and after his first few tours he was unfortunate not to attract the attention of the top coaches in attendance. With Toth and AX both confident of his ability, the centre-half then participated in the 2014 residential program in Orebro, Sweden, coached by Patrick Walker. This is when Syrianska first spotted Toth and, with the 2015 season looming, they contacted Walker to enquire of his status. Upon hearing he was a free agent they made it a double swoop of AX players.

With plenty of goals scored last term, Örebro Syrianska IF have made a statement of intent in acquiring Wimmer and Toth. Plug up the gaps at the back and they could be a sure-fire bet for promotion. By their debuts last weekend, a 1-0 win, it looks like Syrianska could have already found the solution to their porous defence.
